Loch Katrine

Visiting Loch Katrine

Loch Katrine is about one hour’s drive from us here at Loch Lomond Waterfront. There are many reasons why you may have heard of this beautiful loch in the Scottish Highlands. The legendary Rob Roy MacGregor was born on Loch Katrine’s northern shores in 1671. It provides the setting for Sir Walter Scot’s poem The Lady of the Lake. And also in the Rossini opera, La Donna del Lago, which was based on Scott’s poem. It features in the Scottish bagpipe march, The Athole Highlanders Farewell to Loch Katrine. And in 1859, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited to open the Loch Katrine Aqueduct. Most recently, Brenachoile Point on the loch became a filming location in an episode of the TV series Outlander. Today, the loch is a popular tourist destination, great for walks, cruises and sightseeing.

Loch Cruises

Climb aboard at Trossachs Pier and embark on a magical tour of the loch. Enjoy a cruise on the historic Sir Walter Scott steamship, or one of the other ships operated by Loch Katrine cruises. The SS Sir Walter Scott was first launched in 1900 and is still going strong. Sail past the magnificent Ben A’an and Ben Venue and see many other wonderful sights of the Trossachs.

Trossachs Pier

Trossachs Pier is the departure point for loch cruises. There is a large pay and display car park and facilities on site. The Steamship Café offers tasty meals and refreshments. And Katrine Gifts is perfect pitstop to grab some local gifts.

Walking and Cycling

There is a lovely walk along the lochside, which you can combine with a cruise. The surrounding area is great for walking too, with routes such as the Great Trossachs Forest Path and Primrose Hill. Cycle hire is also available from Katrine Wheelz.

Loch Katrine is free to visit, but charges apply for parking and some of the services and attractions mentioned above.

  • A magical getaway

'It is not at all a surprise that you are fully booked.  If there is one place in the world we would like to be this summer, that place is Loch Lomond Waterfront Lodges, and I’m sure the only people who don’t share this passion are those, who simply have never been there. What a magical getaway and a retreat you have created! Thank you for that.'
  • We'll definitely be back again

'I just wanted to thank you for such a lovely stay.  The lodge was beautiful and the facilities and views amazing.  We will definitely be back again.'
  • A perfect place to relax

'Stayed at the Waterfront Lodges for a Fri to Mon short break for our daughters birthday last weekend. Lodge was placed right on the edge of Loch Lomond with stunning views.'
  • Our own private beach

'Just walking along the West Highland way path past some of the crowded beaches made us realise the value of having your own private waterfront onto the loch.  I can still picture walking down to the lochside on our first evening and watching an osprey dive for a fish!'
